Freedom is dangerous?

This Virginia Postrel essay is a definate must read: Reason: Consumer VertigoA new wave of social critics claim that freedom’s just another word for way too much to choose. Here’s why they’re wrong. The thought of academics embracing a world view that sees choice as dangerous, and something people need to be protected from is very scary indeed. Certainly it is not too far from some of the nanny state philosophies on the left (and compatable enough with the social conservative views) that such a philosophy could gain considerable political momentum. Tyranny would, I fear, not be too far behind. (via Instapundit)
