Surprise Nomination Pick

In a move that surprised everyone, President Bush has nominated a white caucasian male to the supreme court. I have no particular knowledge or opinion of John Roberts Jr. I am sure we will here everything that could possibly be bad about him in the next few days.

I did a little checking up on Roberts the other night and he looks like a solid pick.

What I want to see, though, is how he handles himself in front of Congressmen closely questioning him during the upcoming hearings. Reports say Roberts generally maintains a calm demeanor and that's certainly a good asset for a judge. But keeping that demeanor in front of a politically-divided Congress will be the ultimate test of patience.

I'm leaning toward supporting Roberts, but if he handles himself as well in front of Congress as Clarence Thomas, I'll easily support Roberts. And I maintain that Thomas has been, without a doubt, one of the best justices to serve on the Supreme Court in recent history.

He has argued many supreme court cases, which if he could surive a roome with a divided court, he probably will surive the senate.
