The Rise and Rise of the American Empire
This Sigmund, Carl and Alfred post on how different the American Empire is from Empires of the past, and how unlikely it is that the American Empire is on the verge of a fall is a great read. I don't see any sign of an immanent or even an eventual collapse. Time of course eventually destroys everything, but I wouldn't hold my breath on 'the American Empire' being gone any time soon.

I am glad that you have comments because that SCA post you linked to doesn't. If America is always eager for countries to be free to enjoy the luxury of their own decisions, then why were we so opposed to the freely elected government of Nicaragua in the 1980s? We supporting countries making their own decisions when they agree with us. And what exactly did he mean by "Americanism" when he claimed that we weren't imposing it on anyone? We don't force religion or language on other countries, but we have been forceful in trade and the promotion of our system of government.
Can I ask the same question regarding Chile?
And, closer to my home, why should the US get its knickers so badly knotted just because NZ does not allow nuclear armed and powered vessels in its terrirotrial area? Go back through the history of that one - as I keep repeating. One does have to wonder why there is so much pressure brought to bear on the NZ government. Oh, BTW don't say it is because we are looking for a free trade agreement - China is offering a much better deal...
Final, and different note -
Every empire is born with the seeds of its own destruction. I suspect that we are already seeing the seedlings sprouting...
